Magic Video

Oftentimes when you are trying to perfect a new trick a written description just will not do. The words used to describe the complicated movements involved seem to get in the way more than clarify things. If this is the case it’s time to turn to a video of the trick you’re trying to learn.

Magic videos have many advantages over a textual description of a trick. They can be paused at vital moments to see exactly what is going on while the trick is going on. They can play a trick at full speed to see what it should look like to the audience, and then slow it down and even change camera angles to give you a better view of what you need to do to make that happen.

The magician can also provide commentary during a video that is more appropriately timed than written commentary could possibly be. When I write “you should be hooking the little finger of your right hand in the catch of your left sleeve while you gesture with a flourish using your left hand to distract” it becomes a meaningless mass of instruction. Seeing the gesture illustrated while hearing those words has an entirely different effect.
